With the surge in new technology, filmmakers have been developing the way that they produce some the world\u2019s best films, including short films<\/a> and\u00a0documentaries<\/a>. A few decades ago, it was a massive surprise when films were produced using the latest HD technology, whereas now they are being filmed using the latest 4K technology.<\/p>\n

However, in recent years, there has been one film technique that has gotten people talking; the \u2018ghosting\u2019 technique. This has been used in some of the world\u2019s biggest blockbuster hits, but there is still a slight air of mystery behind it. However, we at Video2DVD will look at what makes this technique so special.<\/p>\n

What is \u2018Ghosting\u2019?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2018Ghosting\u2019 is a technique that has been up in arms, especially after the release of the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story<\/em>. The technique in question focuses on the idea of CGI resurrection, where actors that have sadly passed away are brought back to life using the latest computer generated imagery, commonly known as CGI.<\/p>\n

Was There Any Controversy Involved?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When this \u2018ghosting\u2019 technique was used in Rogue One<\/em> \u2013 if you didn\u2019t know, the Rogue One<\/em> filmmakers used CGI and the \u2018ghosting\u2019 technique to resurrect Peter Cushing\u2019s character, Grand Moff Tarkin, from Star Wars: A New Hope<\/em> (1977) even though Peter Cushing himself passed away in 1994 \u2013 a lot of film watchers showed their disdain towards the technique.<\/p>\n

According to John Knoll, the Visual Effects Supervisor and Co-Writer of Rogue One<\/em>, \u201cthere are people that have said quite vehemently that it looks terrible and looks like a video game\u201d, but he then replied with \u201cwe\u2019re using the computer graphics as a tool to alter his appearance\u201d.<\/p>\n

This Isn\u2019t a One Hit Wonder<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Even though there are some people that disagree with what the Star Wars<\/em> prequel producers have completed when it comes to CGI resurrection and the \u2018ghosting technique\u2019, this isn\u2019t the first time that this technique has been used in the film industry.<\/p>\n

In the 1970s, the Pink Panther<\/em> series of films were incredibly popular, but people thought that it would all come to a stop when Peter Sellers passed away in 1980, but that didn\u2019t stop film producers in their tracks. In 1982, Trail of the Pink Panther<\/em> was released, and one of the decisions that the filmmakers made was that they would use deleted scenes of Sellers as Inspector Clouseau from the previous Panther<\/em> films.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous cases of the \u2018ghosting\u2019 technique to be used in cinema was when Oliver Reed played the slave-owning saviour Proximo in Ridley Scott\u2019s masterpiece, Gladiator<\/em>. Unfortunately, while Reed was on a break from filming, he died from a heart attack.<\/p>\n
